Caribou on Sand | Oil and the Geese | 2006 | 62 in. x 70 in.

July 2006, Teshekpuk Lake wetland, Alaska. The Teshekpuk Lake wetland supports a relatively small but culturally significant caribou herd. Most concentrated calving activity for the 45,000–animal Teshekpuk Lake herd occurs south, east and northeast of the lake. After calving, the caribou move to the coastal habitats east, north and northwest of the lake, seeking relief from swarms of biting insects. This is one of the most important caribou herds for subsistence harvest by the Iñupiat people of Atqasuk, Barrow, Nuiqsut and Wainright.
