KASEGALUK LAGOON AND CHUKCHI SEA I | Oil and The Whales | 2006 | 68x86 inches
In this photograph I used wind to define an aesthetic of ecology. When the wind blows in one direction, it pushes the nutrient-rich fresh water of the river out of the lagoon and into the sea. When it blows in the other direction it brings the sea water into the lagoon. This mixing of nutrients of fresh and sea water creates a very rich ecological habitat in the lagoon and near-shore water of the ocean. This habitat is used by host of migratory birds, numerous species of fish, seals, and whales.
